Urdanibia Square is the central public space in the Historic Center of Irun, where the city’s main public events take place: weekly markets, patron saint festivals, craft fairs, and concerts. Prior to the intervention, the site was overrun and fragmented by car use.
A much more
popular, vital, and busy square
The project reclaims the square for people, establishing close relationships of complicity with the site and its history. The large dimensions of the space, previously highly fragmented, are highlighted, and the green infrastructure is given continuity to link the city center with the green spaces on the outskirts.
The work has allowed for the preservation and enhancement of the positive social dynamics that already existed in the area, while prioritizing inclusive use by people. This has resulted in a much more vital and busy square, which has multiplied its uses and its popularity in the city of Irun.
