Urban revitalization of spaces in transit

A former surface parking lot, adjacent to Barcelona’s Sants Station, is beginning a provisional transformation to become, in the near future, a large urban green space: the Viriat Forest.

The wait for the full park to arrive will be long, so the goal of the intervention was to use design not only as a tool for mediation and consensus but also as a kind of therapy to give neighbors back their optimism, positive outlook, and desire to enjoy a long-awaited public space.

    and vital place

    Orange colors symbols of energy, confidence, and good humor invite the community to reclaim the street while respectfully introducing the square into the conversation of the surrounding urban landscape.

    The transformation of the Viriat surroundings has led to an immediate revitalization of the space, a first step in its ultimate recovery as a place for meeting, play, and rest. The new square has sparked interest among various groups: neighbors, passersby, schoolchildren, associations, travelers in transit… such that the former parking lot is now a busy and vital place.
