The spaces reclaimed for the city around Port Vell, following the ’92 Olympic Games, need improvements that update them to meet new urban needs arising from the increased use of public space and the recurring heatwaves caused by climate change.
Empathetic design for a more livable city
The former breakwater of the Port of Barcelona, known as “El Rompeolas,” was built in 1914 and remained intact until the opening of the “Nueva Bocana” in 2003. As a feat of engineering, it enabled the emergence of new technologies and trades, and as a public space, it became a popular spot for Barcelona’s inhabitants.
