Innovation and Mediterranean tradition

At Port Vell, the oldest operational area of the Port of Barcelona, a new single-story building over the water, close to the city, is designed to serve marina users and visitors.

The building is composed of two volumes sheltered under a single envelope that wraps around them. This idea is materialized with the scob lattice, a prefabricated concrete piece designed ad hoc to form the facade, roof, and entrance atrium. The study of light, wind, and solar radiation shapes a proposal based on the Mediterranean character of transition spaces between indoors and outdoors. The seemingly lightweight lattice reconnects with familiar port imagery, where fishers stretch out awnings to shield themselves from the sun while they repair their nets during the hottest months.

    the relationship between
    architecture and landscape
    that so strongly defines
    Mediterranean identity.

    The drive this project has brought to R&D in concrete prefabrication has resulted in the first marketable facade product (scob lattice), a milestone in the history of prefabrication company Escofet.
